Communication

In stage A2, the focus of the Communication substrand is on the further development of ESL students' use of English for participation in everyday school and social routines. By participating in a wide variety of language-based classroom activities, students' confidence and ability to use English continues to develop. Students use oral and written English in a wide range of classroom learning activities and contexts, based around the key learning areas. Students develop skills in formal and informal interpersonal communication, which help them to form and maintain social relationships. Teachers build upon students' existing skills in English and introduce them to new English, modelling English in authentic contexts. Students become more able to use English to talk about, write about and understand contexts other than the 'here and now', and to understand and communicate more complex ideas, such as possibility, certainty and comparison.

Aspects of language

Contexual understanding

In stage A2, the focus of the Contextual understanding substrand is on the students' developing ability to manage the increasingly complex language demands of the classroom and the playground. As students become more familiar with the work and social routines of the classroom, they also become more familiar with the differing language demands of these contexts. They understand that some situations are more informal or formal than others, and have correspondingly different language demands. Students begin to modify their use of English appropriately for a variety of audiences and situations.

Linguistic structures and features

In stage A2, the focus of the Linguistic structures and features substrand is on the students' developing awareness of and control of the English structures and features that enable them to take part in everyday classroom situations, for socialising and learning. Teachers introduce students to, and familiarise them with, new structures, features and vocabulary that relate to specific language functions, tasks and texts. Teachers constantly revise and recycle vocabulary, structures and features in new contexts and in new situations.

Strategies

In stage A2, the focus of the Strategies substrand is on students' active involvement in the process of learning English, learning through English, learning about English and in managing the social interactions of the classroom and playground. A receptive classroom environment is created in which students are encouraged to use strategies that assist their English learning. They are also introduced to new strategies that will assist them to manage the learning tasks they are given.
