Students draw a map showing their route from home to school, and describe the path taken.
The Task Students were asked to picture a map of the local area in their minds and then tell the features that would be shown. These were listed on the board ("Bird's eye view of roads, trees, houses, school, …"). Students were then asked to draw a map showing their route from home to school. They were to include directions (written or drawn) to describe the path taken. Look For
Jack (Year Prep) drew his home, the school, and the road from home to school. The buildings were shown 'side on'. He included arrows to show the path. His directions were general and accompanied by gestures: "I go up here and down here and then here." Suggests Level 1 in the substrand. Beth (Year 1) drew her home, other houses, and the school. Her buildings were drawn from the side but turned when the road turned. Her directions were reasonably clear: "I go to the road and turn left and go along the road to the school." Suggests Level 2 in the substrand. Jez (Year 2) drew a labelled map that showed home, school and surrounding roads. She made a good attempt to use a 'bird's eye view' of the landmarks. Her directions were very clear: "Turn right into Kelleher Rd. Turn left. Go up to the Goomalibee Rd. Turn a bit and I am at school." Suggests Level 2 in the substrand. | |||||||||
