THE ARTS
INTRODUCTION

Back to Introduction

The later years- Years 9-10

In the later years of schooling, students undertake more specialised studies in specific arts areas, developing a more focused and perceptive understanding of the arts disciplines. Both the nature of the Arts studies at this level as well as the content of programs begin to prepare students for future choices relating to VCE studies and vocational pathways. Level 6 extension outcomes provide a framework for assessing students who may be achieving at a higher level in a particular strand.

Arts practice

Students in the later years use a wide range of sources for their ideas in the development of arts works and explore alternative perspectives on issues and concepts. They respond to ideas, using their knowledge of arts practice, and demonstrate an aesthetic sense by combining knowledge of arts elements, skills and processes with imagination, perception and personal style in arts works. Students refine their skills in creating and presenting arts works using a range of forms, techniques and processes. They document the development of ideas and processes in making arts works and contribute effectively to group work. Students are encouraged to display technical competence and aesthetic sensitivity in presenting works for specific audiences and purposes, effectively using presentation spaces and equipment.

Responding to the arts

When responding to the arts in the later years, students analyse the expressive ways in which arts elements, skills, techniques and processes are used. Students interpret the content and aesthetic qualities of arts works and justify personal evaluations through official analysis. Students use a knowledge of arts language in a competent and appropriate manner. They are able to challenge aesthetic values, question others' arts opinions, discuss the nature of the arts and evaluate the aesthetic qualities of arts works. Students learn about the works of particular artists, taking account of social, cultural and historical issues and the traditions of the art form. Teachers assist students to develop an understanding of vocational pathways in the arts and the significance of the arts in their lives and contemporary society.

Extension outcomes

For each level 6 learning outcome, an extension outcome has been provided for recognition of the achievements of those whose work displays greater skill and understanding than that expected at level 6.
