For this task the relevant learning outcome and indicator at level 4 are:

Location
4.2 Use informal coordinate systems (positive numbers only) and intermediate compass points to specify location or give directions.
MASPL402
Locate coordinate points on graph paper (e.g. a rectangle has corners at (3,2), (3,5), (2,5), (2,2)).

Prior learning

This task requires that students know how to use coordinates of the form (x,y).

TASK - Dot To Dot Drawing

Students were asked to complete a dot-to-dot drawing by using a ruler to join coordinates of the form (x,y) using positive numbers only (first quadrant) on grid paper. Students were given the coordinates in three columns, as well as the instruction that horizontal (across) coordinates are given first, and vertical (up) coordinates second. They were also asked to give the coordinates of two locations on the given picture.

Students were given 20 minutes to complete the task and they were expected to work independently with no assistance from other students or their teacher.

 Working at level 4

The following sample illustrates the kinds of responses that students typically produce when they are working at level 4.

Write the coordinates of the dog's eye

and the tip of the boy's nose

AJoins the points correctly most of the time.

BJoins some of the points in Column 2 in the wrong order (joins (3,3) (3,12) (7,2) (8,8)) and misses the line from (3,12) to (8,8) in Column 3.

CIdentifies the coordinates of the dog's eye and boy's nose in the correct order.

Locate coordinate points on graph paper (e.g. a rectangle has corners at (3,2), (3,5), (2,5), (2,2)).
